The global demand for long-range electric vehicles (EVs) is driving unprecedented growth in the solid-state battery (SSB) market, a sector projected to expand by $ 554.8 million from 2024 to 2028, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 44.97%, according to Technavio.

Collaborations Fuelling Innovation

The booming automotive sector has attracted several new entrants to the SSB market. Established battery manufacturers are securing investments and forming strategic partnerships to advance solid-state technology. Notably, Ilika, a pioneer in solid-state technology, leads a $ 10 million collaborative project called the Faraday Battery Challenge. Partnering with BMW, Nexeon, and three top UK universities, Ilika aims to develop an automotive-grade SSB.

Similarly, Factorial Energy collaborates with recycling company Young Poong to establish a lithium-metal recycling process, which supports a circular economy. MAHLE and ProLogium’s partnership also highlights industry efforts to optimise thermal management solutions for next-gen SSBs, enhancing driving range and safety standards.

These alliances, involving industry giants such as Toyota, General Motors, and Bosch, intensify market competition and bolster research and development. This wave of collaborations supports a diversified SSB landscape, catering to applications in EVs, aerospace, and industrial equipment.

SSBs are revolutionising various sectors, including wearable devices, consumer electronics, and automotive. In EVs, SSBs provide greater range, faster charging, and increased safety, offering a distinct advantage over lithium-ion batteries. Other high-performance applications include IoT devices, wireless medical devices, and renewable energy storage, where solid-state technology meets the need for compact, reliable, and long-lasting energy storage.

For the renewable energy sector, SSBs are becoming integral for efficient energy storage, stabilising grids, and supporting microgrid applications. Companies like Solid Power and Thin Film Batteries are leading developments, exploring alternative materials such as wood-derived batteries and lightweight designs that further reduce environmental impact.

The widespread adoption and falling prices of lithium-ion batteries make them a tough competitor, potentially slowing the adoption of SSBs.
