In a strategic leadership move aimed at ensuring stability and sharp execution during a transformative period, Volvo Cars’ Board of Directors has announced the reappointment of Håkan Samuelsson as Chief Executive Officer and President, effective April 1, 2025, for a two-year term. He is expected to be proposed as a new member of the Board of Directors at Volvo Cars’ upcoming Annual General Meeting.
Samuelsson returns to the helm of Volvo Cars with a proven track record and deep ties to the company. He previously served as CEO from 2012 to 2022, a decade during which he redefined Volvo Cars as a global premium brand, expanded its global footprint, and oversaw its successful initial public offering (IPO). He also served on the company’s Board from 2010 and most recently as Chairperson of Polestar until 2024.
Eric Li, Chairperson of the Volvo Cars Board, said, “This is a pivotal moment for Volvo Cars and the broader auto industry. The Board is pleased to welcome Håkan back. His deep industrial experience, strategic clarity, and steady leadership are exactly what we need to reinforce Volvo Cars’ global position and unlock its next wave of potential.
Samuelsson’s appointment comes as the automotive landscape becomes increasingly complex, shaped by technological disruption, global competition, and geopolitical uncertainty. His leadership will be central to advancing Volvo’s transformation toward intelligent electrification, software-led innovation, and sustainable growth.
Reflecting on his return, Håkan Samuelsson said, “The car industry is under pressure from many directions. I’m honoured to return at such a defining moment for Volvo Cars. I look forward to working with our talented team to sharpen competitiveness, strengthen execution, and continue building on our legacy of trust, innovation, and responsibility.”
The leadership transition also marks the departure of Jim Rowan, who has served as CEO since 2022. He stepped down and left the Volvo Cars Board on March 31, 2025. Under his leadership, the company accelerated its transition into a software-driven, connected car company, laying the groundwork for digital growth and innovation.
“Jim has made vital contributions during a time of significant change. His vision helped accelerate Volvo’s digital capabilities and position the brand for long-term growth. We are grateful for his leadership and dedication Li noted.
Rowan expressed his gratitude, stating, “It has been a privilege to lead Volvo Cars and work with such an exceptional team. Together, we’ve launched industry-leading products and built a strong, fast-growing brand. I wish the company continued success as it moves forward.”
