In a significant move towards accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in India, Volkswagen Group and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (M&M) have inked a supply agreement. The deal, signed on February 16th, 2024, marks a crucial milestone in their collaborative efforts towards advancing e-mobility in the region.
This includes leveraging Volkswagen's innovative unified cell concept, a cornerstone of the German automaker's battery strategy. Mahindra becomes the first external partner to harness this cutting-edge technology, reflecting the depth of trust and collaboration between the two automotive giants.
The supply agreement, spanning several years, is projected to reach a total volume of approximately 50 gigawatt-hours (GWh). Both Volkswagen and Mahindra aim to fortify their presence in India's burgeoning EV market, capitalising on the country's immense potential for electrification. With India ranking among the world's largest automotive markets, the transition to electric propulsion is poised to gather significant momentum in the years ahead.
For Mahindra, this collaboration serves as a pivotal step in its ambitious electric vehicle roadmap. The Indian automaker intends to introduce five all-electric SUVs based on its INGLO platform, with the first launch slated for December 2024. By leveraging Volkswagen's advanced electric components, Mahindra seeks to enhance the performance and appeal of its EV line-up, catering to the evolving preferences of Indian consumers.
