Vedanta Aluminium, India’s leading producer of aluminium, has achieved a significant milestone in its expansion efforts, aiming to become one of the top three global players with an aluminium production capacity of three million tonne per annum (MTPA).
The expansion of the alumina refinery in Lanjigarh has boosted its production capacity from two MTPA to 3.5 MTPA, with plans to further increase it to five MTPA as part of the company’s ongoing expansion strategy. This move aligns with the company's vision to support its growing aluminium production needs by enhancing its raw material security and optimizing operational costs.
Vedanta Aluminium is renowned for offering a wide range of high-quality aluminium products, including Restora, India’s first low-carbon ‘green’ aluminium range. These products cater to various industries such as automotive, aerospace, defence, infrastructure, power projects, electricals, and packaging, among others. Additionally, the company is a significant producer of premier smelter-grade alumina (SGA), a crucial raw material for its aluminium plants in Jharsuguda (Odisha) and BALCO (Chhattisgarh).
John Slaven, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, expressed his delight at the successful commissioning of the expanded capacity, emphasizing its strategic importance in enhancing raw material security and reducing costs for the company's aluminium smelters in Jharsuguda and BALCO. He highlighted the expansion as a significant step towards achieving 100% vertical integration and positioning Vedanta Aluminium for sustainable growth in the global aluminium market.
Vedanta Aluminium, a business unit of Vedanta Limited, holds the distinction of being India’s largest aluminium producer, manufacturing over half of India’s aluminium output, totaling 2.37 million tonne in FY24. The company is also a leader in value-added aluminium products, contributing significantly to key industries. Vedanta Aluminium's commitment to sustainable development practices is underscored by its top ranking in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2023 for the aluminium industry.
