Uttar Pradesh bags the honours for being the jewel in India’s crown for vehicle sales between April and June of this fiscal. Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are the closest runners-up, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on August 7.
A closer look at the breakups show that while Uttar Pradesh was the highest for overall vehicle sales, with Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu following in hot pursuit, it was Maharashtra which was right on top in passenger vehicle sales with a share of 12% for Q1. UP followed with 10% while Karnataka and Gujarat were tied at 8% each. Tamil Nadu and Haryana were, likewise, at par with 7 apiece.
In two-wheeler sales for Q1, UP was the highest with a whopping 17% while Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu were in the second and third slots with 8% and 7% each. It also explains why UP is so critical to entry level motorcycles and the leadership of Hero MotoCorp as a result. Bihar and Karnataka were tied at 7% each.
As for three-wheelers, it was UP again with 12% while Gujarat and Maharashtra were in second place at 10% each. Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu followed with 7% apiece.
And, finally, in commercial vehicles, Maharashtra topped the list with 12%, followed by UP at 10% and Tamil Nadu just behind with 9%. Karnataka and Gujarat shared the fourth place with 7% each.
