Uber Introduces New Features mobility outlook

Uber has announced a suite of new features aimed at enhancing the safety, fairness, and convenience of the driving experience for its over one million active drivers in India. With the Indian government pushing for better social security for gig workers, Uber’s updates are designed to support this initiative, including incentives for e-Shram registrations which provide a safety net for gig workers.

Uber has introduced several measures, including a Helmet Verification feature. This requires two-wheeler drivers to take a selfie with their helmet before beginning trips using real-time verification to ensure compliance. Additionally, Uber has introduced an option for female drivers to accept only female riders particularly beneficial during late hours. This feature helps female drivers work more flexibly and safely. The company has also implemented an audio recording option allowing drivers to record audio during trips if they feel unsafe. The recordings are encrypted, ensuring privacy and are only accessible if submitted as part of a safety report.

Uber’s updates also focus on making the driving experience easier and more rewarding. A new Upfront Tipping feature allows riders to add a tip before the trip begins, incentivising drivers to accept requests more promptly. Uber has also introduced Instant Payments, enabling drivers to cash out their earnings within five seconds, up to four times daily. This offers drivers immediate access to their earnings, setting a new standard compared to the previous industry norm of weekly cash-outs. Uber’s Mentorship programme pairs new drivers with experienced mentors to help them adapt to the platform, offering guidance in local languages.

The revamped Earnings Hub now provides a detailed breakdown of earnings including what portion of the fare goes to Uber and the exact amount paid to drivers. This feature also displays local government taxes and highlights tips that drivers receive in full. The new Deactivation Review Centre allows drivers to review profile actions, understand reasons, and appeal decisions with supporting evidence. Since its introduction, over 5,000 drivers have successfully regained access through legitimate appeals.
