KPIT Technologies has partnered with Trentar Energy Solutions Pvt Ltd to commercialise its breakthrough sodium-ion battery technology. This collaboration marks a significant step in advancing alternative energy solutions that promise to reduce dependency on lithium, enhance battery lifespan, and provide faster charging capabilities.
First unveiled in December 2023, KPIT’s sodium-ion technology offers significant advantages over lithium-ion batteries, including an extended lifespan with 80 per cent capacity retention for 3,000 to 6,000 cycles and the ability to charge faster. The use of earth-abundant raw materials in sodium-ion batteries makes them a cost-effective and sustainable alternative for electric mobility and energy storage. Applications for this technology span two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, public transport, UPS systems, grid storage, and even marine and defence sectors.
Trentar will invest in manufacturing infrastructure capable of producing 3GWh of sodium-ion batteries annually. In return, KPIT will receive an upfront technology transfer fee along with royalty payments over the next eight years. This partnership positions both organisations among an elite group of sustainability-focused entities globally that are advancing sodium-ion battery technology.
Ravi Pandit, Chairman, KPIT Technologies, stated “Sodium-ion battery technology was born from the team's passion, perseverance, and collaboration with leading research institutes. We are pleased to have this agreement with Trentar, who will commercialise the technology for multiple market opportunities. KPIT will continue to work on other sustainable technology solutions.”
Subodh Menon, Founder and Vice Chairman, Trentar, added “With its cost-effectiveness, simplified supply chain, and enhanced safety, sodium-ion technology represents a strategic focus for our organisation. We are committed to developing a robust product line catering to diverse customers across mobility and energy storage verticals.”
