Toyota Motor North America (Toyota) and San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) have announced a collaboration to research vehicle-to-grid (V2G) capabilities using the Toyota bZ4X battery electric vehicle (BEV).
The V2G research aims to explore bidirectional power flow technology, enabling BEV owners to charge their vehicles from the grid and discharge electricity back to the grid. The partnership targets improved energy reliability, resilience, integration of renewables, and potentially reduced electricity costs.
With nearly 80% of BEV owners charging overnight at home, the research seeks to understand how bidirectional capabilities can support grid demands during peak hours or shortages. The collaboration will take place at SDG&E’s campus in San Diego, using Fermata Energy’s bidirectional charger and V2G platform.
