Toyota Kirloskar Motor Marks Women mobility outlook

In honour of Women’s Equality Day on 26 August, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing gender equality and empowering women within its workforce. The company has set an ambitious target to increase the representation of women in its workforce to 30% by 2030, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals focused on gender equality.

To achieve this goal, TKM has introduced a series of initiatives aimed at fostering a more inclusive and diverse workplace. These include the formation of a senior-level team dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), as well as extensive benchmarking across industries. TKM has also aligned its efforts with the International Labour Organization’s 2030 agenda to create greater opportunities for women in the workforce.

G Shankara, Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration at TKM, stated “At Toyota Kirloskar Motor, we believe that gender equality is not just a goal but a critical driver of our success and sustainability. Our commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse workplace is deeply embedded in our organisational values. As we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, we reaffirm our dedication to creating equal opportunities and paving the way for a more equitable future for all.”

A significant milestone in this journey was the recent capping ceremony held in March 2024, where TKM celebrated the graduation of its first batch of 55 women supervisors. Additionally, 160 new female team members were inducted, bringing the total number of women in the company to over 450, with plans to expand this to more than 850 by the end of the year. TKM has also introduced a Gender Diversity Standard Operating Procedure Manual and conducted unconscious bias surveys and the 'Samvardhana' sensitisation program to create a more supportive and inclusive environment.

The company has doubled the intake of its three-year residential course at the Toyota Technical Training Institute (TTTI) to 1,200 students, with up to 600 spots reserved for female students. In support of this initiative, TKM has invested in significant infrastructure improvements, including the construction of a new dormitory to accommodate the increased number of female students and upgrades to safety features and facilities at TTTI.
