The Innova family is Toyota’s golden goose when it comes to volumes with it hitting double-digit lakh and completing 20 years next year. But Toyota has a new potential golden goose on its hands in the form of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which has managed to sell 90,000 units in the two years since it was launched in India.
What’s more, Toyota has had more from the deal getting a seat in the C-segment where it had long been vying for a presence. It had previously tried to enter with the Vios sedan but by then in the face of an SUV tsunami, the premium sedan ship had already sailed on from the Indian car market.
With Indian buyers now looking higher up the price point in terms of car segments, Toyota could very easily hit the next 90,000 in a much shorter period. This is no doubt also helped by states like Uttar Pradesh taking the lead in offering massive subsidies for self-charging hybrid vehicles.
In the equation, Toyota has brought the strong hybrid package while Maruti Suzuki has brought its mild-hybrid 1.5-litre engine to the game. Accordingly, both manufacturers have been seeing higher demand for their respective contributions.
