On Wednesday, the homegrown Indian car manufacturer Tata Motors augmented its electric vehicle (EV) portfolio by unveiling the new Tigor EV, its second EV for the passenger car market. From today onwards, Tata Motors will commence bookings for the new Tigor EV at select dealerships at INR 21000. The new car gets major improvements in power and technology over the existing Tigor EV, also called the Xpres-T. Developed around the three pillars of technology, comfort and safety, the new EV is equipped with innovative technologies in its powertrain, infotainment, connectivity and charging, promising a comfortable, smooth and relaxing ride. Powered by the proven high voltage electric architecture from the company- Ziptron, the new EV delivers a maximum output of 55 kW and a maximum torque of 170Nm. Compared to the older generation, the power and torque get a 25 kW and 65Nm boost. According to the company the car can zip from zero to 60 kmph in 5.7 seconds. The Tigor EV comes with an IP 67 protection class battery and motor. It is powered by a 26 kWh lithium-ion battery supporting it to offer the highest onboard performance in the segment. The company said that the Impact Resistant Battery Pack casing of Tigor EV complies with AIS – 048 standards for nail penetration at cell Level. In addition, the new EV is compatible with globally acceptable CCS2 charging protocol and can be fast-charged and slow charged from any 15 A plug point.
Anand Kulkarni, Vice President, Product Line, Electric Vehicle and ALFA Architecture – Passenger Vehicle Business, Tata Motors, said the Ziptron technology has enabled the company to dispel, to a large degree, the popular myths surrounding the EVs today with respect to power, monsoon usage, reliability, suitability for long-distance driving, frequency of charging and so on. The Tigor EV comes with 30+ connected car features, including remote commands and remote diagnostics, using which customers can be in touch with the car through their phones. Vivek Srivatsa, Head-Marketing, Passenger and Electric Vehicles Business Unit, Tata Motors, said that the past few years were the first years that India introduced EVs, but now is the time for most of the early shifts to these eco-friendly vehicles. 'With the all-new Tigor EV, we want to lead this evolution to mainstream EVs in India with a message to all automotive enthusiasts to Evolve to Electric,' he added. Tata Motor's EV journey started in September 2017 when it got the Energy Efficiency Services Limited - EESL's tender for providing EVs for government usage. The Nexon EV was the first EV from the company to cater to the personal segment launched in January 2020. The company claims that more than 8,500 Tata EVs have hit the Indian roads to date, and out which, more than 6,000 consists of the Nexon EV.
