Tata Motors has launched the updated Harrier and Safari starting at INR 15.49 lakh, ex-showroom and INR 16.19 lakh, respectively. Sailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motor India stated that since 2019 the Harrier and the Safari have been sold over 1.60 lakh units.
Both the vehicles retain the earlier 2.0L 168hp Kyrotec diesel engine. While the six speed manual gearbox remains the same, the vehicles also get an option for monostable gearshift leaver with e-shift. This means that there is no cable linkages between the shifter and gearbox which allows quicker shift time. Another addition this time around to both the models is a paddle shifter.
Furthermore, the vehicles also get electronic power assisted steering (EPAS). This in turn helped the company tune the suspension, both springs as well as the dampers.
Meanwhile, on the inside both the vehicles now feature Tata Motor’s digitalised concept with touch controls for central console, while also featuring 31.24 cm infotainment system along with a 26.03 cm digital instrument cluster. The vehicles also get a 10 speaker JBL sound system with HARMAN AUDIOWORX.
Interestingly, the infotainment system and digital instrument cluster along with other functions now use a single ECU called the Cockpit Domain Controller which makes the distribution of signal across the electronic devices inside the vehicle seamless.
A notable change this time round with both the vehicles is the distinct approach for each product that Tata has taken. The company says that while the Harrier is targeted towards young minds, the Safari on the other hand is for more mature and sophisticated audience.
This gets conveyed in the colour pallets used for both interior and exterior, choice of materials for cabin and the ‘Persona’ based variant strategy. In the Harrier the personas range from Smart, Pure, Adventure and Fearless while for the Safari, Fearless is replaced by the Accomplished persona. The other personas remain common between the two.
Likewise, the exterior colour option for both the products also differ, in order to suit the respective audience’s taste.
On the inside, the Safari adorns a white colour scheme to give out the message of ‘premiumness’, the Harrier meanwhile gets an all-black interior with body colour inserts to convey the product’s ‘warrior in mind’ personality.
While there are difference, both the products are adequate designed to keep the occupants safe. Based on the ‘Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced’ (Omega) architecture, both the models have score five star adult and child occupancy under GNCAP’s latest test.
On the features side both the models get six airbags as standard with top models getting seven airbags along with 360 degree surround view camera, electronic stability control, emergency call, tyre pressure monitoring system, electronic parking break with auto hold and hill hold control.
Additionally, the Harrier and the Safari also get ADAS features such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, forward and rear collision warning among others.
The company stated that it is close to achieving level 2 features, the only piece missing is the lateral support.
