Tata Motors has announced the launch of its mid-sized SUV, the Tata Curvv, with a starting price of INR 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). This new model marks Tata Motors' entry into the rapidly growing mid-SUV segment, offering a unique coupe body style, which stands out in a market dominated by boxy SUV designs. The Curvv is available in three powertrain options: the new Hyperion gasoline direct injection engine, the 1.2L Revotron petrol engine, and the 1.5L KryoJet diesel engine, all equipped with an advanced Dual Clutch Automatic Transmission (DCA).
The introduction of the Curvv is seen as a strategic move by Tata Motors to democratise the growing SUV coupe design. By offering this design in the mid-SUV category, Tata Motors aims to cater to a broader audience, particularly those seeking a blend of style, performance, and cutting-edge technology. The Curvv comes in six colour options—Gold Essence, Daytona Grey, Pristine White, Flame Red, Pure Grey, and Opera Blue—and is available in four personas: Accomplished, Creative, Pure, and Smart.
A notable highlight of the Curvv is the debut of the Hyperion gasoline direct injection engine, which promises a combination of power and fuel efficiency, making it suitable for an SUV coupe. This engine is designed to deliver high performance, with features such as gasoline direct injection, turbocharging, and a variable geometry turbocharger. The Hyperion engine also incorporates advanced technology like a 350 bar fuel injection system and sodium-cooled exhaust valves, which contribute to improved performance and responsiveness. Additionally, the engine is engineered to reduce noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), ensuring a quieter and smoother driving experience.
The 1.2L Revotron petrol engine offers a proven turbocharged powertrain with multiple drive modes—Eco, City, and Sport—catering to different driving conditions. This engine is complemented by features such as paddle shifters and a Smart E-Shifter for the DCA, enhancing driving efficiency and comfort. The 7-speed DCA in the Curvv includes advanced technologies like a wet clutch with active cooling, machine learning capabilities, and a self-healing mechanism, which are designed to optimise performance and durability.
For diesel enthusiasts, Tata Motors has equipped the 1.5L KryoJet diesel engine. This engine is the first in its category to feature passive SCR technology, which reduces emissions without the need for AdBlue refills, making it easier to maintain. The diesel variant also includes the segment’s first 7-speed DCA, which offers multiple drive modes and features like shift-by-wire technology and Auto Park Lock, further enhancing the vehicle's convenience and safety.
The Curvv is built on the ATLAS platform, which integrates performance, safety, and technological innovation to meet the evolving needs of consumers. This platform also introduces Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), providing a comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistance features. Tata Motors has positioned the Curvv as a competitive offering in the mid-SUV segment, combining premium design with advanced technology at an attractive price point.
