Hydrogen Innovation Centre With Hyundai mobility outlook

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has laid the foundation for Hyundai Motor India Limited’s (HMIL) Hydrogen Innovation Centre in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) and Guidance Tamil Nadu. This initiative was announced during the Tamil Nadu Investors Conclave 2024 and the facility set to become operational by 2026.

The Hydrogen Innovation Centre is located on a 65,000 square foot site within the IIT Madras Thaiyur campus in Chennai and is designed to serve as a hub for research and development in hydrogen technology. Supported by an INR 180 crore investment from Hyundai, the centre will focus on innovations in green hydrogen production, fuel cell technology, and hydrogen mobility solutions.

Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer of HMIL, stated that it aligns with Tamil Nadu’s goal of becoming a leader in sustainable and alternative fuel technologies. He emphasised that the centre will play a crucial role in promoting hydrogen as a clean, emission-free energy source for future mobility solutions.

The centre will feature advanced facilities such as an electrolyser test rig for green hydrogen generation, fuel cell fabrication lines, and a hydrogen refuelling station. These resources are intended to support the localisation of hydrogen technology manufacturing and supply chains, as well as the development of digital twin technology for hydrogen infrastructure.

This initiative is seen as a key measure in reducing Tamil Nadu’s carbon footprint while also positioning the state as a hub for automotive innovation. It is anticipated that the Hydrogen Innovation Centre will not only drive technological advancements but also help cultivate a skilled workforce for India’s emerging hydrogen economy.
