Synopsys and SiMa.ai have announced a strategic collaboration to deliver a comprehensive solution that accelerates the development of AI-enabled silicon and software for next-generation automobiles. This partnership aims to empower automotive companies to create workload-specific systems-on-chip (SoCs) and software architectures that meet the rising demand for advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features in vehicles.

Synopsys brings extensive experience to the table, with over 50 automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers leveraging its virtual prototyping technologies and a portfolio of more than 1,000 virtual models. SiMa.ai complements this with its software-centric approach, providing high-performance, power-efficient MLSoC solutions optimised for edge applications.

The integrated solution will combine Synopsys' expertise in electronic design automation (EDA), automotive-grade IP, and hardware-assisted verification with SiMa.ai's cutting-edge machine learning accelerator (MLA) IP and machine learning (ML) software stack.

Tackling Challenges

With advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) becoming key differentiators for automakers, the introduction of generative AI (GenAI) features requires real-time, edge computing solutions. However, current software-defined vehicle (SDV) architectures struggle to meet the diverse demands for compute, performance, and reliability. Automakers face the dual challenge of developing cost-effective systems while de-risking production timelines.

The Synopsys-SiMa.ai collaboration will address these issues by providing a unified hardware-software co-design framework that spans from silicon to systems, enabling automakers to reduce costs, accelerate development cycles, and deliver differentiated in-vehicle experiences.

Key Benefits of the Collaboration

The integrated solution will offer:

    • Early Architecture Exploration: Engineers can guide designs to optimise performance, power, and software application requirements for custom or third-party SoCs.
    • Shift-Left Software Development: Optimised for multi-modal functions and GenAI, the solution includes virtual prototyping and emulation to accelerate hardware-software integration and time to market.
    • Cost-Effective AI Solutions: Silicon-proven building blocks and subsystems for high-performance ML SoCs and chiplets will be fully customisable to handle diverse workloads.
    • Continuous Upgradeability: Virtual prototypes will enable over-the-air updates, supporting current and future automotive AI requirements.

Ravi Subramanian, head of Synopsys Product Management and Markets Group, commented, “Our collaboration with SiMa.ai marks a significant step forward in modernising hardware/software co-design processes. This will help automotive companies meet the growing demand for advanced in-car experiences while balancing costs and industry standards.”

Krishna Rangasayee, Founder and CEO of SiMa.ai, added, “By combining SiMa.ai’s MLSoC platform with Synopsys' industry-leading IP and software, we are enabling auto OEMs to innovate at an unprecedented scale, making future cars smarter and safer.”
