The Shriram Group, a leading Indian financial conglomerate, has announced the establishment of the ‘Shriram Group RT Chair in Computational Mechanics’ at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
Founded in 1974 by Padma Bhushan recipient R Thyagarajan, (fondly known as RT), who holds advanced degrees in Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics from the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, the Shriram Group has grown to be a prominent player in the Indian financial sector, focused on empowering the common man.
The newly established Chair will support distinguished faculty engaged in cutting-edge research in computational mechanics, encompassing mechanical, electrical, electronic, and computational sciences with applications across industries, including automotive.
The appointed Chair, selected at the associate or full professor level, will focus on innovative research to tackle real-world challenges through computational methods. Areas of focus will include novel numerical methods, data-driven modelling of physical phenomena, and emerging computing paradigms like quantum computing.
This partnership is expected to benefit both the academic community and industry by facilitating practical applications and inspiring the next generation of researchers in computational mechanics. The endowment will fund research programmes, workshops, lecture series, and collaborative academic exchanges, enhancing IISc’s reputation as a hub for scientific and technological excellence.
Umesh Revankar, Executive Vice Chairman of Shriram Finance, remarked, “It is an honour to collaborate with IISc, one of India’s leading institutions for scientific research. The Shriram Group RT Chair in Computational Mechanics aims to foster innovation and enhance knowledge across critical fields that impact both academia and industry, reinforcing our commitment to India’s academic landscape.”
