Royal Enfield Unveils First Green Pit Stop In Ladakh: Camp Kharu mobility outlook

Royal Enfield has released Camp Kharu, its first Green Pit Stop in Ladakh. Located in Kharu on the Leh-Manali highway (NH3), Camp Kharu offers a scenic and strategic stop for travellers en route to destinations like Pangong, Tsomoriri, and Hanle. This new facility stands on the banks of the Indus River, overlooking the majestic Zanskar range, and serves as a hub for rest, refreshments, tourist information, and cultural experiences. We’ve just visited the facility and would commend Royal Enfield for the conscious effort of employing local women to curate the menu with Ladakhi cultural souvenirs and cuisine.

Camp Kharu is a two-storied 1,500 sq ft structure built using rammed earth architecture, a sustainable construction method reflecting the traditional practices of the region. This eco-friendly approach aligns with Royal Enfield's vision for sustainable travel and community engagement. The facility is equipped with solar panels, water refilling stations, free Wi-Fi, and charging points, ensuring convenience and sustainability for visitors.

These women, aged 37 to 55, now run the facility's café, serving authentic Ladakhi dishes made from locally sourced ingredients. They also manage the exhibition space and public convenience facilities, contributing to their community’s economic growth and gaining confidence and financial independence in the process.

The café at Camp Kharu offers signature Ladakhi dishes such as Paba, Skyu, and Chutagi, and the SHG women have been trained in various skills, including bookkeeping, facility management, and hospitality. Their exposure visits to Mumbai and Goa and mentorship from established chefs have further enhanced their capabilities. This initiative has provided them with a steady income and opportunities to cater at prominent events, such as the Royal Enfield Motoverse Goa and the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League in Leh.

Camp Kharu also features a lounge and community space on the ground floor, designed to immerse visitors in local culture through exhibitions and workshops. The dedicated exhibition-cum-shop space spotlights Ladakhi Intangible Cultural Heritage, heritage textiles, and local produce. Workshops and community learning activities are planned to engage the local community, including sessions on climate change, conservation, and local flora and fauna.

Royal Enfield's Social Mission aims to work with 100 Himalayan communities to ensure resilience and prosperity in the face of climate change. Initiatives include the development of Ice Hockey in Ladakh, conservation of the Snow Leopard, and the Himalayan Knot textile programme. The Great Himalayan Exploration project documents the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Himalayas, promoting sustainable exploration and active stakeholder engagement.
