Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL), the exclusive manufacturing hub for the Renault Nissan Alliance, has achieved a significant milestone by producing over 4.5 million powertrain units at its Oragadam facility in Chennai.

The facility manufactures cars for both Indian and export markets, with over 2.75 million cars produced since operations commenced. The plant’s state-of-the-art production line encompasses the full engine manufacturing process, starting from the melting of aluminium ingots, casting components like cylinder heads and blocks, machining them to precision, and assembling engines ranging from 800cc to 1500cc. The facility also boasts comprehensive gearbox production capabilities, including gear and shaft machining, clutch housing, and heat treatment.

Since May 2010, the company has manufactured seven types of engines and three varieties of gearboxes. The powertrain division reached the milestone of one million engines in 2016, just six years after starting production, and has also delivered more than 160,000 units of EV reducer components for global exports.

Among the flagship engines produced at the facility is the HR10 TURBO, which incorporates the mirror bore cylinder coating technology seen in high-performance sports cars like the Nissan GT-R. This innovative technology reduces friction, cuts weight, and optimizes heat management and combustion, resulting in smoother acceleration and better fuel efficiency.

Keerthi Prakash, Managing Director, RNAIPL, said, “The production of 4.5 million powertrain units is a very important milestone for RNAIPL. In addition to powering cars produced at our Chennai plant, we have also exported powertrain units and components to other countries worldwide. As part of the $ 600 million investment announced by the Renault Nissan Alliance, we are upgrading our infrastructure to produce engines and gearboxes for our upcoming models.”
