The Renault-Nissan collaboration in India has completed 15 years of operations in the country. It was on August 26, 2008 that Renault Nissan Automotive India (RNAIPL) had laid the foundation stone to build a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Oragadam, near Chennai. The first vehicle to roll out of that facility was a Nissan Micra in May 2010.

RNAIPL, which is the first dedicated alliance manufacturing plant globally for the Renault Nissan Alliance, manufactured its first 100,000 vehicles within a year of starting operations. On an average, RNAIPL has built one car every three minutes since start of production, a release stated.

By September 2013, RNAIPL had manufactured half a million vehicles, while it reached the one million milestone by January 2016. In July 2023, RNAIPL reached the milestone of manufacturing more than 2.5 million cars. Overall, RNAIPL has manufactured 20 Renault and Nissan models in the country.

Going forward, as part of the $600 million investment by the Renault Nissan Alliance in India, RNAIPL will be manufacturing six new models of cars, including two EVs.

Committed to become carbon neutral by 2045, RNAIPL sources 60% of its energy requirements currently from renewable sources. It meets 85% of its water needs from harvested rainwater and is working to becoming water-positive by 2030.

Keerthi Prakash, Managing Director, RNAIPL, said “We remain committed to bringing the best of Nissan and Renault’s products to customers in India and abroad while at the same time reducing the impact of our operations on the environment and supporting the sustainable development of our local communities.”
