Adventurous couple Chris and Julie Ramsey have successfully completed the unprecedented all-electric journey from the Arctic to the South Pole in their Nissan Ariya, covering over 30,000 km. This historic achievement marks the first successful pole-to-pole drive in an electric vehicle (EV), showcasing the resilience and capabilities of the Nissan Ariya.
Starting their 10-month expedition at the Magnetic North Pole in the frozen Arctic Sea, the Ramseys journeyed through the diverse terrains of North, Central, and South America before conquering the challenging landscapes of Antarctica. Notably, this feat is the first time any car, let alone an EV, has accomplished such an extensive journey.
The Nissan Ariya, equipped with e-4ORCE all-wheel control, faced extreme temperatures, high altitudes, and challenging off-road terrains without any modifications to the powertrain or battery. The vehicle, provided by Nissan, underwent adaptations by polar mobility specialists Arctic Trucks, incorporating 39-inch BF Goodrich tires to meet the demands of the harsh environments.
Chris and Julie initiated the planning for the Pole-to-Pole expedition in 2017, drawing inspiration from their prior experience completing the Mongol Rally in a Nissan LEAF. Recognising the potential to generate interest in electric vehicles worldwide, they embarked on this ultimate EV adventure. Their commitment to collaboration and innovation with like-minded partners made Pole to Pole a reality.
Chris Ramsey expressed his confidence in electric vehicles, stating, 'I've always had full confidence in the amazing capabilities of electric vehicles, and I knew our Nissan Ariya would tackle everything thrown at it.' Julie added, 'This has been an incredible journey, with the people we've met, the friends we've made, and the support we've received.'
Allyson Witherspoon, Corporate Vice President, Nissan Global Marketing, Brand, and Merchandising, congratulated the couple, emphasising Nissan's pride in the journey. Witherspoon stated, 'It has shown how Nissan’s innovative technology continues to deliver excitement, whether on a trip to the office or to the Antarctic!'
