In line with the National Hydrogen Mission launched by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, energy major Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Greenko ZeroC, to jointly pursue opportunities in renewables, Green Hydrogen, Green Ammonia and other derivatives of green hydrogen.
Valid for two years, this MoU entails activities that will contribute towards India’s target of producing five million tonne of Green hydrogen per annum by 2030. This MoU will also act as a stepping stone for ONGC to achieve renewable energy targets as per its Energy Strategy 2040, noted Anurag Sharma, Director Onshore, Director Onshore, ONGC.
The Government of India prioritises green hydrogen as a potential solution to help decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as refinery, ammonia, methanol, iron and steel and heavy-duty trucking. Prime Minister Modi had recently noted that the country's Government is aiming to make India the world’s largest hydrogen hub. Adopting green hydrogen can enable India to abate 3.6 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions cumulatively between now and 2050.
Green Hydrogen / Green Ammonia can be defined as Hydrogen / Ammonia produced by way of electrolysis of water using renewable energy, including those that have been banked and the Hydrogen/Ammonia produced from biomass.
