Nissan Motor Co, Honda Motor Co, and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to explore potential collaboration in business integration. This initiative seeks to enhance synergies across the companies as the automotive industry faces transformative changes driven by electrification and intelligent mobility.

The discussions build upon an existing MOU signed between Nissan and Honda in August 2024, outlining plans for a strategic partnership. Mitsubishi Motors is now evaluating its potential involvement, with a decision expected by the end of January 2025. The proposed integration would involve forming a joint holding company to streamline collaboration and drive innovation.

Nissan’s President and CEO, Makoto Uchida, stated “If this integration comes to fruition, it will enable us to deliver greater value to a broader customer base while creating significant synergies across a wide range of fields.” Honda’s CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, added “This is a pivotal moment for the automotive industry. Mitsubishi Motors’ involvement will allow us to advance social change and lead in creating new mobility solutions.”

The potential collaboration focuses on achieving operational efficiencies and leveraging the strengths of each company to address the rapidly evolving demands of the automotive market. Key areas under consideration include advancements in electrification, shared research and development, and the integration of intelligent systems.

Mitsubishi Motors’ President and CEO, Takao Kato, mentioned “We aim to maximise synergies and leverage the strengths of all three companies to achieve mutual benefits and redefine our collective impact on the mobility sector.”

The integration discussions reflect the companies’ recognition of the need for collaborative solutions in the face of global automotive challenges, such as shifting consumer preferences, stringent environmental regulations, and technological disruptions. However, the success of these efforts will depend on the ability to finalise agreements, secure necessary approvals, and realise the anticipated synergies.
