In a significant move, Nissan Motor Co., and Honda Motor Co., have entered into a strategic partnership to jointly research and develop fundamental technologies for next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
This collaboration is formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on March 15, which marks the beginning of an era focused on intelligence and electrification in the automotive industry.
Joint Research
Aiming to accelerate efforts towards a carbon-neutral and traffic-accident-free society, the partnership emphasizes research and development in electric vehicles (EVs) and SDVs, integrating intelligence and electrification. Both companies recognize the rapid technological advancements in software, including autonomous driving, connectivity, and AI, which will significantly enhance vehicle value and competitiveness.
Major Areas of Cooperation
NextGen SDV Platform
The cornerstone of this collaboration is the next-generation SDV platform. Nissan and Honda have commenced joint research on fundamental technologies, aiming to complete basic research within a year and explore the potential for mass production.
Batteries
Batteries are crucial for EVs, and the partnership will explore short-term and long-term cooperation. This includes sharing specifications, mutual supply, and leveraging each company's battery technologies and assets. By commonizing battery cell module specifications, the companies aim to offer a diverse range of battery options and achieve cost reductions. Additionally, Honda and Nissan will consider supplying lithium-ion batteries from the L-H Battery Company, Inc., a Honda and LG Energy Solution joint venture, to Nissan in North America post-2028.
e-Axles
The companies have agreed to standardize the specifications of their e-Axles for next-generation EVs, initially sharing motors and inverters—the core components of e-Axles.
Mutual Vehicle Complementation
Both OEMs will explore mutual complementation of vehicle models from short-term to long-term perspectives. They have reached a basic agreement on the models and regions for initial complementation and outlined a joint product review system for both internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE) and EVs.
Energy Services and Resource Circulation in Japan
The partnership will also investigate cooperation in energy services and resource circulation within Japan, including charging infrastructure, energy equipment, and services utilizing batteries.
Shared Vision
This strategic partnership highlights Nissan and Honda's shared vision of a sustainable and technologically advanced automotive future. By combining their technological expertise and resources, both companies aim to deliver innovative solutions that not only meet the evolving needs of consumers but also contribute to a greener and safer world.
The joint efforts in developing next-generation SDVs, standardizing battery and e-Axle technologies, and exploring mutual complementation and energy services highlight the dynamic nature of this collaboration. As the automotive industry moves towards greater digital integration and sustainability, the Nissan-Honda partnership sets a precedent for strategic alliances aimed at achieving significant advancements in vehicle technology and environmental stewardship.
