MoRTH Proposes Registration Fee Waiver For Electric Vehicles

Issued on May 27, 2021, the draft notification is to encourage e-mobility in the country, said the Ministry, while inviting feedback from the general public and all stakeholders within a month.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed further amendment to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 to exempt Battery Operated Vehicles (BOV) from payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of Registration Certificate (RC) and assignment of new registration mark.

Issued on May 27, 2021, MoRTH said the draft notification is to encourage e-mobility in the country.

Comments from general public and all stakeholders have been sought within a period of 30 days from the date of issuance of this draft notification. The objections or suggestions thereof will be considered by the Central Government.

It must be recalled that the Government of India has been pushing for an e-mobility future in the country. The second phase of the FAME India scheme was implemented from April 1, 2019 for three years with a total budgetary allocation of INR 10,000 crore. This phase focuses on supporting electrification of public and shared transportation and aims to support, through subsidies, 7090 e-buses, 500,000 e-three-wheelers, 55,000 e-four-wheeler passenger cars and 10 lakh e-two-wheelers.
