MG Motor India has announced that its Halol plant in Gujarat has been honoured with the second prize for the National Energy Conservation Award (NECA) 2023 for 'excellence in the field of energy efficiency' in the automobile sector by the Government of India.
The award was presented by the Hon’ble President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and R.K. Singh, Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy at a ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on December 14, 2023. Rajeev Chaba, CEO-Emeritus, and Biju Balendran, Deputy Managing Director, received the award on behalf of MG Motor India.
The NECA, considered the most prestigious award in the field of energy conservation, is driven by the Ministry of Power and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). MG Motor India's Halol plant secured this recognition after a rigorous evaluation process, involving both off-site and on-site assessments by the Bureau's technical team. The assessments aimed to understand the energy conservation measures implemented by MG Motor India at its manufacturing plant and their benefits in terms of energy savings.
MG Motor India stands out as one of the passenger carmakers committed to green manufacturing practices, with 50% of the energy required for manufacturing operations sourced from renewable resources. The company's dedication to reducing CO2 emissions by nearly two lakh MT over 15 years is equivalent to the positive environmental impact of planting over 13 lakh trees.
The brand has already achieved a 36% decrease in CO2 emissions, with levels dropping from 0.59 MT in 2022 to 0.34 MT till November 2023. Projections indicate that this downward trend will persist, with an estimated carbon footprint reduction of 11889 MT by the end of this year.
