Mercedes-Benz India on Friday launched the EQS 580 4MATIC starting at INR 1.55 crore, ex-showroom, India.

Interestingly, the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic manufactured at the company’s Chakan facility is the 14th product from Mercedes-Benz to be ‘Made In India’.

Martin Schwenk, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, noted that the EQS 580 4MATIC is the company’s first locally manufactured EV in India and will play a pivotal role in driving it ambitious EV plans for the market.

A press release from the carmaker noted that to meet the changing consumer demand, the plant is evolving by implementing flexible assembly lines, which can produce multiple models of ICEs and EVs.

Additionally, to complement technological products and advanced manufacturing processes, the workforce also is equipped with traditional as well as futuristic skills like EE-Software, Battery (electrical) technologies and High Voltage architecture in manufacturing environment.

Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways, witnessed the rollout of the EQS 580 4MATIC from Mercedes-Benz India plant.

Vyankatesh Kulkarni, Executive Director and Head of Operations, Mercedes-Benz India, said, “The rollout of the EQS in India as the first market outside Germany is a very proud moment for our plant and confirms our commitment towards ‘Make in India’.”

Under pinning the company’s EVA (Electric Vehicle Architecture) platform, the 107.8 kWh 400V lithium-ion battery pack enable the vehicle to travel 820 kms on a single charge as per ARAI tests.

Additionally, with a combined output of 385 kW qnd 856Nm of torque along with a drag coefficient of 0.20, the EQS 580 4Matic is claimed to reach the 100 kmph mark from a standstill in 4.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 210 kmph.

The new EV does resemble AMG EQS 53 4Matic, however there are few notable changes. To start of with, the new vehicle gets a plain blanked out front grille while at the side it gets a different design for the aerodynamic alloy wheels.

In terms of technology, the car features a 10 degree rear axle steering along with the ‘Hyperscreen’ setup with 17.7-inch infotainment screen and 12.3-inch screens each for driver and the passenger.

Moreover, it also gets 3D maps, heads-up display, massage function for the front seats, a Burmester 3D sound system, air filtration and MBUX tablet for the rear seat passengers.

On the safety front, the EQS 580 features nine airbags, lane change and lane keep assist, and an emergency stop system.

The company noted that the new EV has been awarded with a  5-star rating from Euro NCAP and like other models from the brand features a rigid passenger cell, special deformation zones and state-of-the-art restraint systems.
