Kia Corporation has officially opened the Gwangmyeong EVO Plant, Hyundai Motor Group’s first dedicated electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facility. Located at Kia Autoland Gwangmyeong in South Korea, this new plant is set to produce the Kia EV3 and EV4 models, with an annual production capacity of 150,000 units. The EV3 has already entered production in the first half of 2024, while the EV4 is scheduled for the first half of 2025.
Kia’s investment of KRW 401.6 billion in the Gwangmyeong EVO Plant highlights the automaker's commitment to enhancing its EV production capabilities. The facility spans 60,000 square meters and is designed to be both eco-friendly and worker-friendly. It features cutting-edge manufacturing processes, including automated guided forklifts and water-based painting methods, which reduce environmental impact compared to traditional oil-based techniques.
The plant represents a full-scale transformation of the original Gwangmyeong Plant 2, which previously produced internal combustion engine vehicles. The decision to rebuild this facility into a hub for EV production aligns with Kia's broader goal of sustainable growth. Mayor Seung Won Park emphasised the importance of this development for Gwangmyeong City, expressing hopes that the plant would place the city at the heart of Korea's EV industry while contributing to local economic growth and job creation.
With the production of the EV3 already underway, Kia is set to ramp up its output of electric vehicles, positioning the Gwangmyeong EVO Plant as a key facility for its future EV models. The upcoming EV4, a mid-sized electric sedan, is expected to strengthen Kia’s position in the global EV market, supporting the company's ongoing efforts to meet rising demand for sustainable vehicles.
