July Sees Momentum Continue In Vehicle Sales

Most OEMs across different categories posted good growth

Things are looking nice and bright for Indian automakers with many of them posting year-on-year growth in July.

Maruti Suzuki, the market leader in cars, retailed 181,630 units, including exports, up from 175,916 units in the same month last year. Tata Motors' sales in the domestic and international markets totalled 80,653 units, down a tad from 81,790 units in July 2022.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) reported its highest cumulative sales ever with 21,911 units of which domestic sales were 20,759 units and exports accounted for the balance 1,152 units. This represents a steady growth of 10% compared to July 2022, where sales stood at 19,693 units.

In June 2023, TKM sold 19,608 units, thereby posting month-to-month growth of 12%. The company previously posted its best monthly wholesales in May ’2023 by selling 20,410 units. Hyundai Motor registered total sales of 66,701 units where the domestic tally was 50,701 units and exports 16,000 units.

Mahindra & Mahindra sold its highest-ever SUV numbers of 36,205 units in a month in the domestic market with exports taking up 1,314 units. The company's commercial vehicle sales were 20,898 units.

MG Motor India reported sales of 5,012 units, a growth of 25% over the corresponding month of the previous year. The company saw more than 34% of sales coming from its EV segment thanks to the encouraging response to the ZS EV and MG Comet.

2Ws Grow

Suzuki Motorcycle India achieved a significant monthly sales milestone by recording an overall tally of 107,836 units in July. The company sold 80,309 units in the domestic market and exported 27,527 units. This sales record translated to a year-on-year sales growth of approximately 41.5%. This is the first time Suzuki has posted monthly sales of over a lakh two-wheelers.

Royal Enfield, meanwhile, posted sales of 73,117 motorcycles against 55,555 motorcycles sold in July 2022, registering a growth of 32%.

CVs & Tractors

Commercial vehicle sales were also brisk with Ashok Leyland reporting 15,068 units, up 11% from 13,625 units in the same month last year.

Mahindra & Mahindra farm equipment sector's total tractor sales (domestic + exports) were 25,175 units, as against 23,307 units for the same period last year. Exports stood at 1,007 units.
