JK Tyre & Industries, one of India’s top tyre manufacturers, has sharpened its commitment to sustainability by joining the global RE100 initiative, pledging to transition entirely to renewable electricity by 2050. RE100, led by the Climate Group in partnership with CDP, includes over 400 of the world’s largest companies committed to renewable electricity.
To achieve its ambitious goal, JK Tyre has set a midterm target of reducing its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity by 50% by FY2030, compared to its 2019 baseline. By doing so, the company aims to not only align with future climate regulations but also exceed them, leading the industry towards a carbon-neutral future.
Dr. Raghupati Singhania, Chairman & Managing Director of JK Tyre, said, “Joining RE100 is a testament to our strong environmental commitment. Guided by the motto ‘today for tomorrow,’ JK Tyre places energy efficiency and conservation at the forefront of our priorities. We are proud to join global leaders in this renewable energy movement and hope to inspire meaningful change within the industry.”
Dr Divya Sharma, India Executive Director of Climate Group, welcomed JK Tyre to the RE100 network, calling the company’s commitment a “milestone” for India’s manufacturing sector. “It demonstrates that renewable electricity can meet large-scale manufacturing needs,” Sharma added.
JK Tyre has made significant progress in sustainability. Currently, 40% of its energy consumption is derived from renewable sources, and the company aims to increase its use of green energy by 2-5% annually. The company has also reduced its GHG emission intensity by 64% since FY14 and established a global benchmark in water usage across its manufacturing sites, which are now Zero Liquid Discharge, Zero-Waste-to-Landfill, and free of single-use plastics.
