IKEA India pushes its sustainability efforts by achieving 100% electric vehicle (EV) deliveries across Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune. Additionally, IKEA is piloting same-day delivery in Hyderabad, with plans to expand this service across its markets in the coming year.
This development is part of IKEA India’s ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and creating a sustainable value chain. Since beginning its exploration of EV solutions in 2019, the company has progressively increased its use of electric vehicles, reaching an 88% EV adoption rate in 2023. This latest achievement demonstrates IKEA's dedication to environmentally responsible operations and sets a new standard for sustainable logistics in India.
Susanne Pulverer, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA India, stated 'For IKEA, a sustainable value chain is an essential part of our growth journey. This milestone is just one of many as we lead the EV journey from our foundational years in India. We strongly believe that profit and planet can be co-created and will continue to lead with this mindset.'
IKEA India’s transition to 100% electric last-mile delivery began in 2019 with the introduction of electric vehicles into its delivery fleet. Initially, the company used three-wheeled tuk-tuks for smaller deliveries and later incorporated retrofit trucks for larger furniture items. To support this transition, IKEA has developed in-house infrastructure for charging its EVs and has expanded its partnerships with local manufacturers and startups to enhance its mobility solutions.
In addition to expanding its EV fleet, IKEA India is also increasing the availability of charging stations for large electric vehicles across the country. These stations have been installed at all of the company's large-format stores, serving delivery vans, customers, and co-workers. The diverse EV fleet, equipped with advanced Telematics technology, handles varying loads and ensures compliance with government regulations.
