In a bid to bolster India’s capabilities in sensor technology development and manufacturing, the Electronics City Industries Association (ELCIA) and the India Electronics & Semiconductor Association (IESA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The partnership envisions establishing a dedicated Centre of Excellence (ECoE) for sensor technologies. This initiative will address India’s growing demand for sensor modules, with the domestic market currently valued at INR 20,000 crore and projected to reach INR 31,000 crore by 2027. The ECoE-Sensors will prioritise industrial sensors initially, with plans to expand into other verticals over time.
Driving Innovation, Self-Reliance
The ECoE-Sensors will leverage advanced technologies such as analog and digital sensors, semiconductors, Micro-Electromechanical Systems (MEMS), Nano-Electromechanical Systems (NEMS), infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV), and laser technologies. MEMS and NEMS, which combine mechanical and electronic components, are particularly critical for the development of industrial sensors—a key focus area for this initiative.
Ashok Chandak, President of IESA, highlighted the importance of the collaboration, stating, “This partnership with ELCIA is a critical step toward bolstering India's ambition to be a Product Nation. Sensors play an essential role in countless applications. Focusing on sensor design, manufacturing, and applications will not only reduce reliance on imports but also contribute significantly to the growth of India’s semiconductor and electronics sectors.”
Building Robust Ecosystem
ELCIA President Sriram Kumar V emphasised the importance of reducing dependence on imported sensors, which currently exceeds 90% of the market demand. “ELCIA has embarked on an ambitious journey to create a holistic ecosystem that bridges industry and academia. Collaboration is the key, driven by passion and determination to support the Indian industry. We welcome IESA as an integral part of this transformative initiative.”
Dr V Veerappan, Chairman of IESA, said, “This collaboration plays an important role in India’s sensor manufacturing sector. By combining our strengths, we aim to build a robust ecosystem that will drive growth, create jobs, and promote research and development in the sensor domain. Our ultimate goal is to make India a hub for sensor manufacturing and innovation.”
Aiming For Global Leadership
The MoU reflects both organisations’ commitment to promoting self-reliance in India’s electronics and sensor industry. By fostering innovation, advancing manufacturing capabilities, and promoting research and development, the collaboration aims to reduce India’s reliance on imports and establish the country as a global player in sensor technology.
This initiative is expected to create opportunities for domestic and international markets, strengthening India’s position in the global semiconductor and electronics landscape while contributing to economic growth and technological advancement.
