Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) reinforced its dedication to the ‘Make-in-India’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives by spotlighting its localisation achievements at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. The company unveiled a Localization Zone, showcasing its strides in achieving up to 92% localisation in manufacturing and saving $672 million in foreign exchange since 2019.
A key highlight of HMIL’s indigenisation roadmap is the launch of a state-of-the-art battery-pack assembly plant within its Chennai manufacturing facility, a joint effort with Mobis India Limited. This plant has an annual capacity to assemble 75,000 battery-packs, including NMC (Lithium-Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt Oxide) and LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate) batteries. The Hyundai CRETA Electric is the first model equipped with locally assembled battery-packs, positioning it as a trailblazer in Hyundai’s EV journey in India.
Strategic Localisation, Employment Growth
HMIL’s localization efforts have not only reduced import dependency but also fostered direct employment for over 1,400 individuals. The company collaborates with 194+ vendors for more than 1,238 parts, further boosting India’s manufacturing ecosystem. Key components such as alternators, alloy wheels, disc brakes, and clutch assemblies have achieved 100% localization, while advanced technologies like TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) and NOX sensors have been indigenized for the first time in India.
Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer at HMIL, said, 'HMIL’s indigenization efforts are deeply in sync with the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make-in-India’ initiatives. The commissioning of the battery-pack assembly plant is a key milestone in our localization and EV roadmap. The Hyundai CRETA Electric is a true game-changer, being the first Hyundai EV manufactured in India to feature locally assembled battery-packs.”
Strengthening Future Localisation
Hyundai also revealed plans to expand its localisation efforts with its upcoming manufacturing plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra. This facility will deepen HMIL’s supplier network and further its indigenization goals, positioning India as a key hub in Hyundai’s global manufacturing and EV strategy.
