Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced a collaboration with Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Limited (ARE&M) to equip its vehicles with Made-in-India Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery technology.

The AGM batteries, designed for Starting, Lighting, and Ignition (SLI), outperform conventional Complete Maintenance Free (CMF) batteries by 150% in durability tests, offering quick charging, longevity, and enhanced efficiency, particularly for vehicles with ISG (Idle Stop and Go) systems. These batteries also align with India's BS-6 Phase-2 Real Driving Emissions (RDE) norms, ensuring environmental compliance and improved performance for Indian driving conditions.

Additionally, the localisation effort reduces costs, supports local job creation, and lowers the carbon footprint by eliminating import dependency. Extensively tested at Hyundai’s global R&D centre in South Korea, the batteries are tailored to enhance the range, efficiency, and environmental impact of Hyundai's future models.

Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer at HMIL, highlighted the significance of this localisation effort, stating, “Working with Amara Raja to bring this world-class technology to Indian customers underscores our commitment to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and our focus on innovation.”

Harshavardhana Gourineni, Executive Director of ARE&M, added, “This partnership reflects our mission to deliver cutting-edge energy solutions and support Hyundai’s vision for redefining future mobility.”

With a localisation strategy involving over 194 vendors and over 1,200 components sourced locally, HMIL continues to strengthen its focus on India’s automotive ecosystem, paving the way for innovation and sustainability.
