In a significant step towards fostering a sustainable mobility future, Hyundai Motor Company and Škoda Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing a global hydrogen mobility ecosystem.

Ken Ramírez, Executive Vice President and Head of Global Commercial Vehicle and Hydrogen Business at Hyundai Motor Company, and Petr Novotný, CEO of Škoda Group, inked the partnership that aims to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell systems and explore the broader hydrogen ecosystem.

Ramírez said, “Our partnership with Škoda Group aims to accelerate hydrogen adoption, contributing to the advancement of hydrogen technology and carbon neutrality across global markets, including the Czech Republic. Together, we strive to lead the rapidly growing hydrogen sector by creating positive synergies between our fuel cell technology and Škoda’s mobility products and projects.”

Both companies share a vision that hydrogen will be a central pillar in the global shift towards sustainability, starting with its role in mobility. Hyundai, already recognised as a leader in hydrogen technology, will bring its advanced fuel cell systems to the partnership, providing the foundation for eco-friendly solutions in mobility and beyond.

Novotný, said, “We believe hydrogen, alongside energy-efficient solutions, will play a crucial role in transforming mobility for a more sustainable future. By working with Hyundai, we can explore markets beyond our national borders and introduce innovative, eco-friendly solutions to a wider audience, addressing critical energy needs.”

Expanding Hydrogen’s Role Beyond Mobility

The MoU outlines several strategic areas of focus. Hyundai and Škoda will jointly explore hydrogen fuel cell system applications in various sectors beyond mobility. This includes conducting feasibility studies for the adoption of hydrogen technologies in energy-efficient solutions, while also identifying value chain opportunities within the broader hydrogen ecosystem.

Hyundai's role in this partnership is underscored by its comprehensive hydrogen value chain initiative under its HTWO brand, which encompasses all stages of hydrogen production, storage, and distribution. Leveraging its global expertise and experience in hydrogen applications, Hyundai is well-positioned to aid the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Strengthening Czech Republic’s Role

A key element of the collaboration is the potential to strengthen the Czech Republic’s position in the hydrogen mobility sector. Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Czech (HMMC), established in 2008, is one of the most advanced car manufacturing facilities in Europe. With an annual production capacity of 350,000 vehicles, the Nošovice-based plant stands as the largest foreign investment in the Czech Republic. This facility could play a pivotal role in implementing hydrogen-based solutions within the country and beyond.

Path To Carbon Neutrality

The collaboration between Hyundai Motor Company and Škoda Group marks a critical step in the global effort to reduce carbon emissions and foster sustainable energy alternatives. By pooling their expertise, both companies are poised to drive the next wave of innovation in hydrogen technology, offering solutions that address the growing demand for clean energy in the automotive industry and other sectors.
