Hyundai IONIQ 5 launched

Developed on its dedicated BEV platform E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor India today launched the IONIQ 5 all-electric SUV in India at INR 44.5 lakh.

The Hyundai IONIQ 5 is anchored on the pillars of modularity, performance, reliability and usability, said the company. The SUV features 21 Hyundai SmartSense features (Level 2 ADAS), and would come with an ARAI-certified range of 631 km per full charge.

The Ultrafast Charging feature can help charge the IONIQ 5’s 72.6 kWh battery from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes with a 350 kW DC charger and in 21 minutes (ambient temperature of 25° C) with a 150 kW DC charger, said the company.

In addition, the vehicle features 400 V & 800 V multi-charging options to reduce waiting times at charging stations – both the 800 V ultra-rapid and 400 V rapid chargers can be used simultaneously.

Unsoo Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India said the IONIQ 5 represents the company’s shift towards future mobility with tenets that encapsulate intelligent technology, innovation and sustainability. “Driving the pump to plug revolution, Hyundai IONIQ 5 will pave the way for faster adoption of electric mobility and build customer confidence towards truly liberating electric mobility solutions,” Kim said.

Sustainability Measures

Inspired by Hyundai’s first passenger vehicle – Hyundai PONY – the IONIQ 5 gets lot of features made using natural and bio-based materials. For example, it gets bio paint on its surfaces such as crash pad, switches, steering wheel and door panels that includes oil extractions from plants such as rape flowers and corn.

Eco-processed leather used in Hyundai IONIQ 5’s interior is dyed using flaxseed oil, and headlining and carpet fabric includes bio components extracted from sugarcane and corn. The fabric is created using plastic bottles that are shredded into plastic chips, which are then melted and spun into threads that is used on the seatback and door armrest of Hyundai IONIQ 5. In addition, the IONIQ 5 also gets 100% recyclable paperette from HDPE, which has the same lightness and texture of traditional paper.
