Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has announced that its flagship IONIQ 5 has set a Guinness World Record for the greatest altitude change by an electric car. The vehicle successfully navigated from Umling La in Leh Ladakh, the highest drivable point in the world at 5,799 metres above sea level, to Kuttanad in Kerala, situated three metres below sea level, achieving a total altitude change of 5,802 metres.

This feat was accomplished over 14 days, covering a distance of more than 4,900 kilometres across some of India’s most challenging terrains. The journey tested the IONIQ 5’s resilience and technological advancements, as it endured freezing temperatures in the Himalayas and humid coastal conditions in Kerala.

Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India Limited, stated “The IONIQ 5’s performance across such extreme conditions underscores its advanced design and engineering prowess, reinforcing our vision of ‘Progress for Humanity.’”

The Hyundai IONIQ 5, built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), features a 72.6 kWh battery and offers a combination of exceptional driving range, advanced safety features, and smart technologies. Inspired by Hyundai’s iconic PONY, the car’s progressive design represents a new era in electric mobility.
