On the sidelines of the Kia EV9 launch, the Korean automaker confirmed to us that its first locally-made EV, a Carens EV, will arrive in the second half of CY 2025 and this will be followed by a second, smaller EV in 2026. The second EV would be launched alongside the Creta EV at roughly the same time. But ahead of its much awaited IPO, Hyundai has revealed that it will launch the Creta EV in last quarter of FY 2025 i.e January-March of next year.
Our money is on the EV SUV arriving at the 2025 Auto Expo and a price announcement by the end of the financial year. This will be a major step for the automaker as it will be one of the first few locations outside of South Korea where Hyundai is building EVs not just for the local market (in this case India) but also for export to both left and right hand drive markets.
We already know that the Creta EV will make use of a modified version of the existing platform underpinning the Creta/Seltos/Carens/Alcazar. This will be the same platform used for the Carens EV, Alcazar EV and possibly even the Sonet/Syros EV. The battlefield where the Creta EV is entering will be the next big arena with players like Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Kia, Honda, MG, Tata and Mahindra all vying for a slice of the electrical pie.
