Honda’s new ‘simplicity and something’ interior design philosophy will debut on the all-new 11th generation Honda Civic to be unveiled tomorrow. The Japanese automaker provided a preview of its new interior design direction for future models on Monday, April 26. While the ‘simplicity’ philosophy will be the design language of Honda, the ‘and something’ will see design additions made to individual models to increase their personality and appeal.
Johnathan Norman, Creative Lead, Honda Interior Design - US, said. “We are pursuing this design language with the new Hondas we’re designing in the studio now.”
Minimalistic approach
Honda’s newly revealed design philosophy emphasises its classic ‘Man Maximum/Machine Minimum’ approach, which focuses on maximising cabin space for occupants while minimising space required for mechanical components.
Norman said, “We’ve heard from designers working for other brands who say they were inspired by the simple, human-centred design of old Hondas. Well, so are we!” Upcoming vehicles will feature uncluttered and expansive outward visibility, a well-known Honda trait, and high interior space and comfort levels.
Eye on the future
Advanced technologies that have brought a range of new capabilities and connectivity to automobiles today have also added a level of complexity that is creating new challenges. Upcoming Honda automobile interiors will feature a simple clean and horizontal orientation.
With increasingly sophisticated entertainment and navigation systems now appearing on automobiles, Honda will use the fast processor for a lag-free performance, a simplified navigation structure with fewer embedded menus, touchscreen displays that will feature large and easy to recognise icons and retain the physical volume knob for the in-car entertainment system.
