Hindustan Zinc Limited has introduced EcoZen, its low carbon ‘green’ zinc brand. Zinc is primarily used in the galvanization of steel to prevent corrosion, making it a vital mineral for various sectors such as steel, infrastructure, automotive, renewable energy, electronics, and electric mobility. Hindustan Zinc’s EcoZen underscores the company’s commitment to decarbonising its operations and offering customers more sustainable products. This new product is expected to lead to a total carbon emission avoidance of about 400 kg per tonne of steel galvanised with EcoZen.
The production of EcoZen aligns with Hindustan Zinc’s verified Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) goals to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2030. The company is increasing the use of renewable energy in its power mix and enhancing operational efficiency to further mitigate its carbon footprint. Recently, Hindustan Zinc started receiving the first flow of round-the-clock renewable energy as part of its 450 MW power delivery agreement, in addition to its existing 40.7 MW of captive solar power. These initiatives have helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 14% in FY24 from 2020.
Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc and Non-Executive Director of Vedanta Group, stated 'Sustainability continues to be at the core of all our business decisions. The launch of EcoZen is another leap in our journey of becoming Net Zero by 2050. By setting global benchmarks in the field of ESG, Vedanta's Hindustan Zinc is revolutionising the natural resources industry by creating safer, smarter and more sustainable operations and products.'
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited, added “The launch of EcoZen marks a historic milestone in our journey of decarbonising our operations, also serving environmentally conscious customers who are discerning about the origin of the raw materials they use and aim to decarbonise their supply chain. Produced with a carbon footprint of less than one tonne of carbon equivalent, EcoZen represents one of the most sustainable low carbon zinc options on the market.”
