FLASH, the Pune-based manufacturer of electronic components has inked a new technological collaboration with Slovenia-based GEM Motors to strengthen its electric vehicle (EV) competencies and portfolio. GEM motors is specialised in developing high-tech electric motors for electric vehicles.
With this new partnership, FLASH has become the first company in India to have EV motors ranging from 1 kW to 540 kW, catering to a wide range of vehicles, including electric two/three-wheelers, passenger cars, LCVs, HCVs and electric buses.
Under this new partnership, both brands will manufacture hub motors for various EV segments, in the range of 1 kW to 15 kW. The partners intend to make this a global manufacturing hub for these motors that come with integrated controllers using advanced modular multiphase motor technology. The partnership will also give FLASH access to 20 global patents of GEM Motors.
GEM Motors’ modular multiphase motor technology integrates all components of an electric drive system into a compact solution and simplifies the electrification of vehicles, while minimising their weight and transmission costs. This makes the solution cost-effective, said the company.
The modular design of the motor increases redundancy, claimed the company, and a fully integrated in-wheel drive significantly shrinks the weight and maximises the efficiency of the overall drive system.
Sanjeev Vasdev, Managing Director, FLASH, said this partnership is in line with global mobility trends and will strengthen India's forthcoming electric vehicle ecosystem. The partnership will “accelerate the shift to sustainable mobility with innovation-driven differentiation for our customer's mobility requirements”, Vasdev said.
“In addition to being highly strategic and exclusive for the Indian market, this partnership aligns with our commitment to being a one-stop solution provider for EV motors globally,” he said.
Simon Madelj, PhD, CEO, GEM Motors called his solutions “visionary innovative designs with a low number of parts, which effectively optimise the space to drive simplicity and superior performance”. “GEM Motors has already on-boarded over 15 customers in Europe, North America, and other countries for their range of motors and are looking to further strengthen their position in India with this new alliance with FLASH,” he said.
The Indian electronics major has so far invested “substantially in the EV segment”, said a release, and intends to invest another INR 150 crore over the next two years. FLASH expects to surpass INR 100 crore in turnover in the first year of launch for EV-related parts, and aims for YoY “exponential growth”.
