Electric vehicle brands seem to be paying heed to NITI Aayog’s advice on voluntarily recalling batches of electric vehicles that have been involved in the incidents of fire. Okinawa, making the first move, has decided to recall 3,215 units of Praise Pro scooters.
One of Okinawa’s Praise Pro scooters had caught fire during the last week of last month. The brand noted that the recall is being done to fix issues, if any, in the batteries equipped in these scooters. This voluntary campaign, as per the brand, is in the wake of the recent thermal incident and in line with the company’s long-standing commitment to customer safety.
An official statement released by the company read, “This is part of its comprehensive power pack health check-up camps. The batteries will be checked for loose connectors or any damage and be repaired free of charge at any of the Okinawa authorised dealerships pan India. The electric 2W maker is working closely with the dealer partners to ensure that the repair experience is as per the convenience of its customers, for which the vehicle owners will be contacted individually.”
Amitabh Kant, CEO, Niti Aayog, had recently noted that electric vehicle brands voluntarily recalling models will help instil confidence in end consumers. Apart from several Jitendra EV branded electric vehicles catching fire last week, the incidents of electric scooters catching fire had become the talk of the town during the last week of March 2022 when an electric scooter from Ola had caught fire.
It is interesting to see that none of the other brands has taken this kind of action so far. Okinawa, Jitendra EV, Pure EV, OLA Electric are some of the brands whose electric vehicles have been in the news recently for fire incidents
