Suzuki Motor Corporation has unveiled its first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e VITARA, in Milan Italy, marking a major step in Suzuki’s strategic focus on electric mobility. Suzuki’s first globally marketed BEV is designed to meet increasing demand for eco-friendly vehicles and aligns with the company’s vision for a carbon-neutral future.

Suzuki’s goal was to create a vehicle that embodies both advanced technology and the strength expected from an SUV. The exterior is equipped with large-diameter tyres and a long wheelbase, enhancing both stability and off-road appeal. Inside, the vehicle features an integrated digital display and rugged control panels, reinforcing the SUV’s adventurous theme. With an overall length of 4,275 mm, width of 1,800 mm, and height of 1,635 mm, the e VITARA offers a spacious, well-balanced build, making it suitable for a range of driving environments.

Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, highlighted that the e VITARA’s launch is part of Suzuki’s larger mission towards carbon neutrality. Suzuki’s approach includes not only BEVs but also hybrid models and vehicles powered by CNG, biofuel, and ethanol, tailored to specific regional needs. By offering diverse powertrain solutions, Suzuki aims to support the transition to low-emission mobility across different global markets. President Suzuki emphasised that the e VITARA represents a pivotal milestone in this strategy, reflecting Suzuki’s commitment to sustainability while maintaining its reputation for reliability and performance.

Efficient BEV Powertrain With Lithium Iron-Phosphate Battery

At the core of the e VITARA’s powertrain is the eAxle system, integrating both motor and inverter components which are paired with a lithium iron-phosphate battery designed for high safety and reliability. Available in two configurations with battery capacities of 49 kWh and 61 kWh, the BEV will provide an agile driving experience, particularly noticeable during acceleration from standstill or overtaking at high speeds. This setup is aimed at delivering a responsive drive that aligns with the demands of both urban and adventure driving.

ALLGRIP-e Electric 4WD System For Off-Road Usage

Suzuki has equipped the e VITARA with the ALLGRIP-e electric 4WD system derived from its expertise in four-wheel-drive technology. The ALLGRIP-e system features independent eAxles on the front and rear enhancing control and responsiveness on various terrains. It includes a specialised Trail mode which employs a limited-slip differential (LSD) function to aid traction on challenging surfaces. This feature allows for smoother transitions on rugged terrain by braking the spinning wheels and redistributing torque to the wheels with better grip, making the e VITARA suitable for both daily commutes and adventurous outings.

HEARTECT-e Platform

The e VITARA’s newly developed HEARTECT-e platform is designed exclusively for BEVs, focusing on reducing vehicle weight and enhancing structural rigidity. The platform features high-voltage protection and a spacious interior, achieved through short overhangs that maximise battery placement. By eliminating underfloor members, the HEARTECT-e platform supports a larger battery capacity without compromising interior space. This innovation aligns with Suzuki’s philosophy of “Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi”—an approach that emphasises minimalism and efficiency through compact, lightweight designs. The platform is integral to Suzuki’s strategy of achieving carbon neutrality by minimising resource consumption across the vehicle lifecycle.

The European specifications for the e VITARA reveal a single-speed electric transmission with a maximum output of up to 181 bhp and torque up to 300 Nm for the 4WD variant. The vehicle’s curb weight ranges from 1,702 kg for the 2WD models to nearly 1,900 kg for the 4WD models, ensuring stability on various road conditions. The e VITARA’s braking system includes ventilated disc brakes for both front and rear wheels, with tyre options of 225/55 R18 and 225/50 R19 designed to handle the demands of higher torque and off-road functionality.
