Biometric Boarding Systems (BBS) using Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) as part of the Digi Yatra initiative will be implemented at Kolkata, Pune, Vijayawada and Hyderabad Airports by March 2023. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has already awarded the contracts for implementing BBS at these airports.
Digi Yatra services were launched in December last year at Delhi, Bangalore and Varanasi Airports with contactless, paperless check-in and boarding process.
The FRT-based Digi Yatra Central Ecosystem has been built by Dataevolve Solutions. The company was selected for the programme through a national start-up challenge run by NitiAayog under the Atal Innovation Mission.
The availability of Digi Yatra services at more and more Indian airports is expected to dramatically enhance the passenger experience by removing the need for ticket and ID verification at multiple touchpoints.
Touchless passenger validation through FRT delivers substantial time savings at airport entry, security hold and boarding, with no intervention by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) tasked with airport security.
Digi Yatra is an initiative of the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) that seeks to deliver a seamless and hassle-free airport experience for air passengers. Airport operators are implementing BBS by themselves without any financial support for its implementation from MoCA.
