Indira Gandhi International Airport’s (IGIA) newly constructed fourth runway 11L-29R was inaugurated by Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, on Friday.
Alongside, India’s first dual elevated Eastern Cross Taxiways (ECT) was also inaugurated.
The new runway will add additional capacity for the country’s busiest airport which is now the first to have four operational runways.
The increased capacity of the ECT and four operational runways will enable the airport to handle over 1,700 aircraft movements in the future.
The ECT will reduce the distance for an aircraft landing on IGIA’s Runway 3 and heading towards Terminal 1 from 9 km to 2 km. This will also help reduce annual CO2 emissions by 55,000 tonnes.
IndiGo, incidentally, made a special validation flight for equipment calibration and route navigation performance-based approach for runway 11L-29R on July 11.
