The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has inducted the Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) and Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) developed 8x8 Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP).
The new amphibious armoured vehicles have been inducted into the CRPF’s 110 Battalion located at Pulwama.
TASL, which manufactures the WhAP at its Pune facility, had delivered the first batch of these armoured vehicles to the Indian Army in April 2022, where they are known as Infantry Protected Mobility Vehicles (IPMV).
Unlike the Army variants, the CRPF WhAPs do not have a Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS), but instead appear to be fitted with what looks like a water cannon, which can be used to disperse crowds.
The WhAP can carry 10 personnel along with two crew members and features a hydraulically operated rear ramp door for quick entry and exit of troops. The 600 bhp armoured vehicle, features an advanced all-independent suspension with hydropneumatic struts that allows it to attain a speed of 80 km/h on land and 8 km/h on water.
