Continental has introduced its 'Intelligent Vehicle Experience Car,' a demonstration of next-generation interaction technologies between humans and vehicles, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025. This innovative model integrates biometric systems, artificial intelligence, and advanced sensor technologies to showcase the future of intuitive and secure vehicle access and operation.

Key features include biometric recognition for user identification and intention interpretation, enabling the car to recognise and respond to an individual even before they enter. For instance, the vehicle can detect an authorised person approaching, unlocking the doors or opening the tailgate automatically. Conversely, if an unauthorised person is identified, the vehicle activates security protocols such as keeping the doors locked and issuing warnings.

The system relies on human-machine interface (HMI) technologies, which are crucial for intuitive user interaction. These interfaces provide visual and audio feedback to ensure users are aware of the vehicle’s status and operations. Continental's approach draws on familiar technologies like smartphone facial recognition, making the transition seamless for users while extending the capabilities to anticipate and personalise user actions.

The biometric capabilities include features such as approach detection, user identification through facial recognition, and intention recognition by analysing gestures or movement. A notable innovation is the intuitive trunk access system, where a glance or gesture can trigger the trunk to open, streamlining operations and enhancing convenience. These advancements mark a significant leap from the current generation of vehicles, with artificial intelligence enabling predictive responses to user behaviour.

The demo car utilises Continental’s CoSmA smart access system, integrating ultra-wideband radar sensors and 360-degree cameras originally designed for parking assistance. These sensors are repurposed to detect and identify individuals, highlighting the potential for multi-functional use of existing automotive hardware. The system is supported by over-the-air connectivity, allowing for seamless integration of updates and intelligent features throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.

Continental’s design also addresses critical challenges including data privacy and energy efficiency. The vehicle employs secure cloud connections to manage biometric data while optimising energy usage to prevent unnecessary battery drain. These measures ensure that the intelligent vehicle balances advanced functionality with user safety and environmental considerations.
