Continental has introduced its 'Emotional Cockpit' concept at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, showcasing a customisable vehicle interior powered by E Ink Prism technology. This innovation brings personalisation and energy-efficient display solutions to the automotive sector, aiming to enhance the in-car user experience.
At the heart of the Emotional Cockpit is a 1.30-metre-long E Ink Prism display integrated across the dashboard. Leveraging ePaper technology, similar to that used in e-readers, the display allows users to customise the cockpit with unique patterns, colours, and designs. Unlike traditional backlit displays, E Ink technology consumes power only during image transitions, significantly enhancing energy efficiency—a critical feature for electric vehicles.
Continental has collaborated with E Ink, a leader in ePaper technology, to adapt this lightweight and durable display for automotive applications. The current black-and-grey colourway offers a minimalist aesthetic, with plans for colour variants in future iterations. According to Pavel Prouza, Head of User Experience at Continental, “Personalisation and emotionality are key success factors for future vehicles. The Emotional Cockpit aligns with the expectations of Generation Z, enabling them to express individuality through digital media.”
In addition to the cockpit display, Continental is exploring exterior applications of E Ink technology. The 'Intelligent Vehicle Experience Demo Car' features an external E Ink display on the B-pillar, allowing users to view personalised content or vehicle status indicators such as battery charge levels. This feature is especially beneficial for electric vehicles, enabling drivers to check the range or charging progress without unlocking the car.
The E Ink display’s ability to maintain static images without power, coupled with its lightweight and durable construction, positions it as an ideal choice for modern vehicles. Dr F.Y. Gan, President of E Ink, stated “Together with Continental, we are introducing an innovative technology that combines energy efficiency with unmatched customisation possibilities in the automotive sector.”
