This magnificent open-top, two-seater performance car without a roof or windscreen is a tribute to the legacy of racing cars.

Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed Shows How Radical Mythos Design Is mobility outlook

Paying homage to racing legends, Mercedes-AMG introduced the Concept Mercedes-AMG PureSpeed, the first model in the highly exclusive Mythos series at the Monaco Grand Prix. It is a preview of the upcoming small series model set to debut next year.

The PureSpeed concept celebrates Mercedes-Benz's racing heritage, particularly drawing inspiration from the iconic Type 55 and 300 SLR models. The HALO system replacing the traditional A-pillar is a standout feature derived from Formula 1, which may just be too radical. But then this safety mechanism protects the driver's head in case of an accident. The concept car also includes specially designed helmets, ensuring a Formula 1-like experience for two passengers.

The car's lightweight construction and advanced aerodynamics ensure top-notch performance and handling. But it will be interesting to see how engineers keep the electronics hidden to give its occupants that genuine race car experience.

The exterior design of the PureSpeed is heavily influenced by the Mercedes-AMG ONE hypercar, featuring technical carbon fibre elements and a low, sleek silhouette. The front end sports a pronounced 'shark nose,' while the long bonnet and low stance emphasise its sporty nature. On record the SLR still has the coolest looking nose ever. The car's wheels are equipped with unique carbon fibre cladding to enhance aerodynamics, with closed rear wheel covers and open front covers for optimised airflow and brake cooling.

The two flying buttresses behind the seats are reminiscent of the 300 SLR, which Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson drove to victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia. The car's paintwork, featuring a gradient from Le Mans red to graphite grey with a black AMG pattern, nods to the victorious Mercedes car at the 1924 Targa Florio race. This car, painted red to avoid interference from local fans, won the race with Christian Werner at the wheel, a significant victory in Mercedes' racing history.

With only 250 units planned for production the PureSpeed will be available exclusively to the most dedicated Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts and collectors.
