The High Court of Karnataka has ordered Classic Legends not to use the Yezdi brand name as the same is under the ownership of the defunct Ideal Jawa India and hence falls under the purview of the Liquidator's office.
When Ideal Jawa went defunct in 1996, it owned all the Yezdi trademark rights. The court had ruled that any party cannot obtain the name unless all pending dues of Ideal Jawa India are cleared.
Boman Irani, Co-founder of Classic Legends, and the other parties involved have been levied with a fine of INR 10 lakh. The court has also given 30 days to stop all activities involving the Yezdi brand name. Classic Legends, in return, is seeking legal advice and might file an appeal against the order.
A press release issued by the company read, “The order is held in abeyance and the company is seeking legal advice on the matter. The company will be filing an appeal against the order shortly and is optimistic of securing favourable relief. In the interim, manufacturing and sale of motorcycles will continue, subject to orders of the Appellate Court.”
A total of 3,709 Classic Legends motorcycles were registered in November 2022. Retail sales of Jawa & Yezdi were at 4,265 units in March 2022, while they saw sales of 2,860 two-wheelers during September 2022, representing a decline of over 32% from March to September. On an MoM basis, Classic Legends registrations declined by over 11% in September 2022.
