Chennai Airport’s Integrated Terminal To Handle 30% More Passengers

The INR 1,260 crore new integrated terminal building will increase the passenger serving capacity of the Chennai airport from 23 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) to 30 MPPA.

Phase 1 of the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Chennai International Airport will cater to growing passenger demand, and its design reflects the beauty of Tamil culture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said.  

Inaugurating NITB recently, he said, “Be it the design of the roof, flooring, ceilings or murals, each of them reminds of some aspect of Tamil Nadu.” 

With the inauguration of Phase 1 of the new integrated terminal building, all international operations at the airport will shift here. The NITB spans an area of 2,20,972 sqm and will cater to the growing air traffic of Tamil Nadu. NITB is being constructed in two phases at a total cost of INR 2,500 crore. 

The cost of Phase 1 is INR 1260 crore and will increase the passenger serving capacity of the airport from 23 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) to 30 MPPA. When fully completed, the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity will increase to 35 MPPA. NITB is being constructed focussing on modern sustainability needs, using eco-friendly materials and extensive use of LED lighting and solar energy. 

The NITB has 108 Immigration counters, split equally between arrival and departure areas. Phase I of the NITB has 100 state-of-the-art check-in counters to expedite departure-related tasks. Security check will also be expedited at the airport with the installation of Automatic Tray Retrieval systems.
